What Happens When My Pumpkin Becomes Soft or Rots?
We have focused much attention to this topic in our testing. First, please refer to the instructions
included with each Enchanted Jack-O-Lantern for the correct way to use it. We recommend
that all users do not suspend jack-o-lanterns overhead, above anything that could be damaged, or
above, or near, flammable materials. Please don't suspend jack-o-lanterns for more than a few days.
All of this being said, when pumpkins start to get soft, they will begin to relax and flatten, just as
when they are on the ground. If jack-o-lanterns are left suspended long enough, they will weaken
enough to fall off of the cable assembly. If your pumpkins start changing their shape (rotting),
please take them down immediately. Please follow the instructions and have fun.
Is The Pumpkin Support Disk Too Small?
This question has come from quite a few people, and so we feel it deserves its own special spot.
We've done years of iterative engineering development and validation testing on
Enchanted Jack-O-Lanterns. How can you support a pumpkin on such a small support disk? It does
somewhat defy intuition.
Pumpkins grow to support their own weight and we have discovered their secrets. In order for the
support disk to 'pull through' the jack-o-lantern, the pumpkin material has to fail in shear. Shear failure
happens in our everyday experiences, such as when you cut with scissors or trim shrubbery.
About the largest shear force that can be generated, when suspending a large jack-o-lantern
is about 2 pounds per square inch. As it ends up, pumpkins are quite a bit stronger than this. You can get
a better 'feel' for this next time you carve a pumpkin. Try to break your pumpkin lid in half without
bending it. Set it on a strong table with part of it hanging off of the edge. Try to shear the pumpkin
material. It is really hard to do. This is why Enchanted Jack-O-Lanterns works so well. This allows
Enchanted Jack-O-Lanterns to be invisible, fit into a small package and inexpensive enough
for everyone to enjoy. We hope this helps, but don't hesitate to contact us if you 'just don't buy it':)
